24 free Wi-Fi kiosks that have been rolled out across the city have been successful at providing residents, college students, and small business owners with a reliable internet connection, both city officials and users have told TAPinto Jersey City.
The kiosks are located in neighborhoods from Newport to Journal Square and fall in line with the Fulop Administration’s desire to improve connectivity and provide support for the city’s overall smart city initiatives.
According to city officials, the kiosks are placed in busy commercial areas as well as neighborhoods with a history of limited connectivity. Each kiosk is built for quick and easy access so that residents can connect their devices and utilize a high-speed internet connection while using the kiosks during peak hours.
The project has developed into much more than connectivity, officials said, with kiosks becoming "an essential platform for real-time transit information and alerts, emergency alerts, updates on issues relevant to the community, and updates and would like to support small local businesses, all for the purpose of improving everyday life in Jersey City."
Kiosks are a part of a larger effort to address the "digital divide" and help to ensure that all residents have access to appropriate technology for work, school, and everyday activities.
“It has made a huge difference for me,” Maria Lopez, a local college student told TAPinto Jersey City, reflecting that they have allowed her to complete assignments outside of her apartment. “I am able to work anywhere and not have to worry about if I would have access to the internet.”
Raj Patel, who runs a café near Journal Square, said that being able to provide free Wi-Fi gives him the ability to better manage online orders and keep track of what is going on with customers. “It helps me run my business better,” he said.
Officials emphasized that the kiosks also represent Jersey City’s commitment to modernization of infrastructure, with an eye toward community needs, adding that the project complemented other smart city endeavors with traffic data, public safety, technology upgrades to city services, and work on the transportation network.
