Smart City Trends to Watch for in 2024 and Beyond

Back when we first wrote this collection of smart city trends, it was amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The general sentiment at the time was that shut-down had put many smart city plans on hold. We all recall hearing about the inevitable rise in self-driving cars. Some experts were even predicting, as outlandishly futuristic as it might sound, flying cars. But our dreams of living in Back to the Future II were put on hold when the health crisis caused cities to re-evaluate their infrastructure plans.

However, despite our general lack of hover-crafts, the pandemic did not kill the smart city dream. On the contrary, many cities pursued other less overtly dramatic smart city initiatives in part because of the pandemic. After all, the smartest cities know that a digitally connected community is just as much about promoting public health and safety, improving emergency response, and effective analytics as it is about transportation and sustainability. They also know that in the long run a smart city saves more than it costs.

Virgin Media O2 successfully trials smart poles to boost UK coverage

Virgin Media O2 has successfully trialled an innovative new way of improving and expanding mobile services by bringing together its fixed network infrastructure with new smart poles, which could help to boost mobile coverage in local areas across the UK.The innovation trial, delivered in collaboration with shareholder Liberty Global, has seen smart poles installed beside the operator’s existing national fibre network cabinets. The poles, which are much smaller than traditional mobile phone masts and do not require planning permission, can be safely installed in less than a day and house small cell technology which can boost mobile coverage in busy areas.

In a UK first, the electricity is supplied by Virgin Media’s fibre network rather than a traditional power supply through innovative ‘digital electricity’ technology, which transmits power from on-street cabinets in the local area along fibre optic cables. The same fixed fibre network is also used to carry data to and from the mobile cells and the internet.

    The Era of Smart Cities

The term “smart city” refers to the use of technology and data-driven solutions to enhance residents’ quality of life, improve efficiency and address various issues (like traffic congestion, pollution, and public safety). The phenomenon is on the rise worldwide, with many local governments adopting smart technologies.

One of the most important infrastructures for a smart city is a robust and effective Wi-Fi network. One such example is Hertfordshire in the UK, which recently upgraded its Wi-Fi infrastructure in over 300 government offices and community hubs. According to Innovation News Network, having a secure network with robust AI capabilities helped Hertfordshire County Council improve connectivity and benefit the community by encouraging residents to use public spaces. Other benefits include a supported hybrid working style and the minimization of roadblocks. Furthermore, if the Hertfordshire County Council wants to integrate other smart technologies, it will already have the foundational infrastructure.

Breaking down the silos to create efficient smart cities

The number of people expected to be living in cities is set to double by 2050 to some 6.4 billion urban dwellers. To cope with this population increase, and to adjust to the new needs of larger cosmopolitan environments, cities will require new and innovative ways of managing their assets and resources.

This is addressed by various smart city initiatives, where clever ways of connecting technologies, data and stakeholders, result in completely new fashions to manage e.g. traffic, street lighting, parking, waste collection or public safety. But for a city to become truly smart, it also needs to break the often-existing silos between different city departments, as well as the silos between public and private entities.

What is a smart city? How many such cities have been built in India so far?

Even the government does not have the answer to the question of: what is a smart city. In June 2015, a ‘Mission Statement and Guidelines’ were issued for this mission. In this document, it is said that there is no universal definition of ‘smart city’. According to the document, “The definition of a smart city is different for every person. So its meaning changes from city to city.”

However, the very next paragraph talks about building ‘developmental’ infrastructure for cities and providing excellent services. According to the document, the entire urban eco-system should be developed in such a way that it is in line with parameters of institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. In a sense, push for holistic development.

How Will AI Shape Our Future Cities?

From Zurich to Boston and Shanghai, more and more places are using “digital twins” to create a virtual version of the city to plan the urban experiences of tomorrow. But a lack of data means there’s still a gap between our visions and reality, which Swiss researchers are working on closing.

For city planners, a bird’s-eye view of a map showing buildings and streets is no longer enough. They need to simulate changes to bus routes or traffic light timings before implementation to know how they might affect the population. Now, they can do so with digital twins – often referred to as a “mirror world” – which allows them to simulate scenarios more safely and cost-effectively through a three-dimensional virtual replica.

IN: Three really smart cities and the impact on people’s lives

The National Democratic Alliance government's flagship Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, aimed to bring transformative changes in urban governance in 100 selected cities. As the mission draws to a close in June (revised; December 2023 was the first deadline), the performance of the participating cities has been a mixed bag.

A parliamentary panel report tabled last week stated that Tamil Nadu's Madurai was the only city that completed all of its projects by December 2023. Fifty-six cities completed more than 80% of the work in the same time frame. However, in 14 cities, the progress was 50% and below. Port Blair, Saharanpur, Puducherry, Itanagar, Silvassa, Shillong, Atal Nagar, and Gangtok had completed between 16% and 39% of the assigned projects till then, the standing committee on housing and urban affairs stated.

Robust growth predicted for global smart cities market

The global smart cities market size is expected to reach $3,728,3-billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 25,8% from 2023 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research which says the market growth can be attributed to rapid favourable government initiatives worldwide and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

This has encouraged several countries to invest in smart city projects to manage infrastructure and assets. Further, the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has also created a demand for the development of charging infrastructure in cities globally. Due to this, it provides energy storage and creates new revenue streams from EV batteries. These benefits will further boost the smart cities market’s growth during the forecast period.

Das EU-Projekt ASAP (Efficient administrative structures as a prerequisite for successful social and economic development of rural areas in demographic transition) wurde nach 24 Monaten Laufzeit abgeschlossen.

1.4 EU-Projekt Rural eGov: Drittes Projekttreffen in Cardiff, UK

Vom 07.-08.

=========================================================================

2.1 USA: Caifornia touts "broadband bonds" for universal service

California has just rolled out an ambitious plan to provide broadband access to everyone in the state, and at speeds that are closer to those in Japan than to the rest of the US. In its final report, the California Broadband Task Force concluded that broadband has become a piece of "critical infrastructure" for the state and that government should get involved in funding its further deployment. Governor Schwarzenegger commissioned the Task Force back in November 2006, and the group was given the goals of making access universal, pushing the buildout of new broadband infrastructure, and driving the use of broadband-only applications. The group started by mapping the state, and it found that 96 percent of California residents already have access to broadband.

2.2 USA: California's broadband good but needs to get better

California leads the United States in broadband availability but the state needs to do a lot more to ensure high speed access makes it throughout the state, a task force reported today. In a final report by the California Broadband Task Force, the group said the state must continue to push for broadband across the state, to ensure residents and businesses realize the full economic, educational and social benefits of widespread high-speed access. The taskforce called on the state to invest in broadband deployment, ease permitting hurdles and create an e-health network in California that will help drive demand for broadband services. "Increasing both access to and use of broadband will build economic capital, strengthen public safety resources, improve living standards, expand educational and healthcare opportunities, and raise the levels of civic engagement and governmental transparency," the task force wrote.

2.3 USA: California: Task force wants broadband available in rural areas

Expand Internet access and increase speed for all, it says.

Likening high-speed Internet to basic infrastructure needs such as power and roads, a state task force on Thursday urged a new push to make affordable broadband available to all Californians. Saying such a system is crucial to the state's economic health, the California Broadband Task Force said government and private industry must team up to expand Internet access and increase speed. The group released a study that said 96 percent of California residents have broadband access, one of the best rates in the nation. Still, that leaves more than 1.4 million mostly rural Californians stuck in the Internet's slow lane. The group said that in rural areas such as the Sierra Nevada, where affordable broadband is scarce and incomes are low, residents are being left behind.

2.4 USA: California broadband report may be model for other states

Report is first survey in the United States to provide household-level information about broadband service availability.

A California report offers a deep look into who has broadband there and who does not and may serve as a model for other states, said an official with Cisco Systems. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Broadband Task Force, which released the report, found that 96 percent of Californians have access to broadband, but speeds vary significantly region to region. Only about 54 percent of Californians have access to 10Mbps, and about 56 percent of the state's residents subscribe to broadband service, the report said.

5.2 Ireland: Millions more wasted on key hi-tech projects

The Government is presiding over another hi-tech fiasco, it emerged last night, after its own spending watchdog uncovered a litany of multi-million euro cost overruns on key projects. A new computer system designed to integrate public services has cost the exchequer a massive €37m despite being originally budgeted at just €14m. Its annual running costs have soared to a further €15m a year. And another plan to develop a "health portal" to provide information about illnesses, health advice and contact details for health services had to be abandoned at a further cost of €2m to taxpayers. Plans to provide on-line applications for housing grants, passports, haulage licences and driving licences also had to be abandoned due to concerns over identification.

5.4 Malta: E-government strategic alliance announced with 14 companies

In a bid to strengthen the software development and IT consultancy sector, while at the same time enhancing public e-government services, Investments, Industry and Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt announced a new strategic alliance between the government and 14 Maltese companies. Of the 14 companies roped into the alliance, 11 are software development companies while the remaining four are software consultancies. 5.5 Sweden Tops 2008 E-Government Readiness Report; U.S. Drops to Fourth

The United Nations just released its 2008 E-Government Readiness Report, ranking countries by e-government development. The 250-plus page report "UN E-Government Survey 2008: From E-Government to Connected Governance" indicate that while governments are moving forward in e-government development around the world, most lack the investment needed to move from e-government applications to a more integrated connected governance stage. Northern European countries, however, have integrated national and ministerial Web sites for more integrated program delivery, according to the report. Europe on average was the highest ranking region.

6.3 UAE to boost e-government plan

The UAE seeks to accelerate the implementation of the e-government mandate with 50 per cent of government services to be offered online in 2008 and 90 per cent by 2010, officials said. The Ministry of Economy has already surpassed the 50 per cent target, and it launched a new portal providing 80 services of a total of 130 services to be introduced by the end of this year. 6.4 Brunei: E-Passport Undergoing Pre-Launch Trials

Brunei Darussalam's biometric passport project (e-passport) is currently undergoing a trial period where the crew of the Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) will be using the new travel documents for the next two months before its official launch. The e-passport is one of the Immigration and National Registry Department's projects under the e-government project and is aimed at replacing the "Machine Readable Passport" (MRP) currently in use. Compared to the existing passport, the e-passport has an embedded 72-kilobyte chip and several security features. The chip itself will contain the owner's facial and fingerprint images. Furthermore, the biometric passport allows for easier and faster checks at immigration checkpoints. The e-passport is already being utilised in all EU member states, US, UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

6.5 USA: Wal-Mart Is Piloting E-Health Record System

Wal-Mart has begun rolling out personal electronic health records to a handful of employees as part of a plan to eventually provide more than a million of the retailer's workers and their dependents with digitized health records. The rollout by Wal-Mart is part of a larger project announced more than a year ago by Dossia, a coalition that includes Wal-Mart and several other large employers. Dossia is partnering with Children's Hospital Boston in developing the e-health system: By offering employees secure access to digitized information -- such as prescription drug records, lab results, and more -- about their own personal health, Dossia member companies like Wal-Mart hope workers and their dependents will be better prepared in making health care decisions, as well as become more proactive in participating in wellness and preventative care programs.

7.1 UK: Delivering frontline, Collaboration and shared services (05.02.2008, London, UK)

It is inevitable that as budgets are stretched further in 2007 than ever before, that issue of sharing resources, knowledge and services arises. However, whilst sharing services can lead to efficiencies, what happens to the customer? Where do they fit into the newly 'joined up' government? Can more collaborative service delivery ensure that services are designed around the customer? This year's Delivering frontline, collaboration and shared services strikes at the heart of this debate. Sharing resources and knowledge is one way to help deliver efficiencies by reducing the amount of duplication involved in delivering services, but meeting the needs of all the partners involved can be a very difficult and tricky business. Hear from successful partnerships on how they were built, function in practice and whether they really do deliver efficiency.
