Geelong locals are being invited to have their say on the use of smart technology in the region.

The City of Greater Geelong is looking to develop a Smart City Framework using digital technology, data and innovative practices to improve the livability, sustainability, collaboration and economic opportunities in the city.

Over the past year Council's Smart City Office has been trialling and testing innovative technology solutions which include:

  • The Geelong Data Exchange - an open, publicly accessible data platform for the generation of new ideas, applications and solutions;
  • The Lorawan Sensor Network - providing free access and connectivity for anyone wanting to understand and utilise the “Internet of Things”; Smart Nodes along the Waterfront to replace outdated, cluttered and disconnected street poles; and
  • 3D City Model (Digital Twin) - a virtual, 3D digital model of urban and rural areas to support development design and visualisation.

The Geelong City Deal is also assisting by new technology trials for the CBD, while Council's proposed 2020 to 2021 Budget includes second year of funding directed to the Bellarine Enhanced Broadband initiative to install high-capacity optical fibre along the Bellarine Rail Trail corridor from South Geelong train station to Queenscliff.

Locals can have their say on the framework by completing a short online suvey here.

Two online workshops are also being held next month:

  • Local Businesses and Innovators Workshop: June 9 from 10am to 11.30am
  • Community Groups Workshop: June 9 from 2pm to 3.30pm
