Transforming Government since 2001
Carers in NSW are about to receive extra support and assistance when looking after patients with a mental illness. On March 12 2012, Carers NSW launched its Mental Health Foundations for Carers E-Learning Tool. The tool functions as a multifaceted website providing carers with access to information, support, resources and practical advice.

CEO of Carers NSW, Elena Katrakis, stated: “The Mental Health Foundations for Carers resource sets out some of the issues carers of someone with a mental illness may face and the types of support they may need in their caring role.”

The website hosts video interviews with other carers sharing insights and other resources such as practical tips on how to navigate the mental health system and how carers can look after themselves with effective communication techniques.

Focus areas covered by the website include:

  • An overview of mental illness covering types of mental illness, how common it is and what causes it.
  • The mental health system including a break down of how the Commonwealth Government, NSW State Government, local health districts, local mental health services and individual health practitioners can assist in caring.
  • Information on treatment and interventions including options for initial treatment, outlining overall goals of treatment and examining long term treatment plans.
  • Advice on dealing with grief and loss including definitions and important information on physical, emotional, social and spiritual impacts.
  • Advice on coping strategies including guidelines to assist carers in managing stress, understanding and overcoming denial, and becoming a caregiver rather than a caretaker.
  • Advice on purposeful coping such as how to deal with common emotions, dealing with carers’ needs and support; and
  • Practical support including information on Carers NSW, carer support groups and counselling, financial assistance, training and events, consumer associations, respite services and family agreements and care plans.

Said Katrakis: “It is important we acknowledge and support carers of people with mental illness so that they can better maintain their own health and wellbeing, and are aware of the supports that are available to them.”
