The Mandalay government will use modern technology to ensure the safety of the public and to improve law enforcement, a senior regional official said.

U Zarni Aung, regional minister for Electrical Power and Construction, said a combined team of the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC), the police and other agencies has been formed to start the process.

His ministry will head the team, he added.

“We will install and apply modern technology for public safety and law enforcement. Security is essential to becoming a Smart City,” said U Zarni Aung.

“When people’s living conditions are satisfactory, the city will be a Smart City.”

Studies to create a safe city are being conducted with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd of China in Aung Myay Tharzan, Pyigyitagun and Maha Aung Myay townships. The project will include the installation of modern CCTV cameras and a monitoring system, he said.

“In the security system, artificial intelligence will be utilised. For instance, when the cameras are on, they will record any abnormal activity such as crime and accidents,” U Zarni Aung said.

“The cameras will follow the incidents, sending information from one camera to another, as well as to the police. These cameras will be compatible with existing ones,” he said.

The regional government did not set a deadline for completion of the project, as it will also study the experiences other cities and how much money will be needed to complete it.
