An index of mobile phone penetration rates and smart phone usage remains low in Myanmar compared with other countries in the region.

The index shows Myanmar scores a mobile density rate of 105 per cent of mobile density and 80 per cent for smartphone usage, according to a Digital Myanmar report made by Telenor.

“Myanmar has a good prospect to reach a higher stage in the ICT sector among the regional countries. The country is gaining ground to go ahead but the report indicates that it is the lowest in indices,” said an official from Telenor Myanmar.

Only 50 per cent of the population in Myanmar own SIM cards and 90 per cent of them are using 4G and 3G networks. Some 80 per cent of them using smartphones and the internet connectivity rate is 0.1 per cent.

Myanmar stands at 171st on the Ease of Doing Business Index, 169th in the UN e-Government Index, 135th in the Global IDI Index and 133rd in the Networked Readiness Index.

Mobile phone density rates of neigbouring countries are: 122 per cent in Thailand, 126 per cent in Indonesia, 142 per cent in Malaysia, 152 per cent in Vietnam and 142 per cent in Singapore. The smartphone density rates are: 59 per cent in Thailand, 40 per cent in Indonesia, 65 per cent in Malaysia, 28 per cent in Vietnam and 78 per cent in Singapore.

Thailand stands at 26th on the Ease of Doing Business Index, while Indonesia ranked 72nd , Singapore 2nd, Malaysia 24th and Vietnam 68th. In the UN e-Government Index ranking, Thailand is 77th, Indonesia 116th, Singapore 4th, Malaysia 60th and Vietnam 89th.

Thailand stands at 78th in the Global IDI Index ranking, with Indonesia 111th, Singapore 18th, Malaysia 63rd and Vietnam 108th. In the Networked Readiness Index ranking, Thailand is 62nd, Indonesia 73rd, Singapore 1st, Malaysia 31st and Vietnam 79th.
