The innovation lab will be operational in 2015, and will focus on the creation of products or solutions that resolve challenges in the public sector, which could be via technological solutions or processes.
The lab will offer open innovation tenders, in which anyone including private companies, academics and government employees can participate, he added.
The government is also aiming to establish a centralized technology unit which will take on the role of coordinating technological initiatives between public sector organizations, as well as providing technical guidelines, according to Soto.
Other key digital government initiatives for the coming four years include the continued digitalization of government services, and the creation of a ministerial committee for digital development.
The government is also beginning a digital government program at the municipal level, which will allow local government authorities to digitalize services offered to citizens, Soto said.
Chile is among the most developed countries in Latin America in terms of e-government, according to a recent United Nations survey.
