Ho Chi Minh City authorities will use smart mobile devices to manage and examine work, a representative from the city’s Department of Information and Communications (DIC) told the Steering Committee of the Smart City project recently.
Related to the city’s plan for an open database center, the DIC will design software for local leaders to directly monitor and capture data as well as to check, direct and manage working progress by smart mobile devices, according to Ms. Vo Thi Trung Trinh, Deputy Director of the DIC.
The software is based on integrating the databases of enterprises, data from foreign investment activities (from the city’s Department of Planning and Investment, the Management Boards of Industrial Zones, and Saigon Hi-Tech Park), the database from hotlines of different local departments, and the database from the electronic single window system.
The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has conducted a practical survey, taking opinions from specialized agencies on the items in the Smart City project.
It is expected that all major items of the project will be finished by the end of this month and a report on citizens’ comments finalized by March and submitted to the Steering Committee.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport (DoT) in mid-January announced the launch of a traffic information portal based of an online digital map and also put an app into operation that informs commuters of traffic congestion in the city to alleviate traffic jams on busy routes.
According to Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Deputy Director of the DoT, the website is designed with four primary functions that will operate using data collected from the city’s traffic cameras and other specialized sources.
The app provides updates on traffic in real time, including the volume of traffic and the average speed of vehicles traveling on specific streets.
Congestion, construction, and repair warnings are also provided and users can access traffic flow images from several hotspots throughout the city captured by a system of over 300 cameras.
Mr. Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, told the launch ceremony that Ho Chi Minh City is the pioneer in the application of information technology in traffic infrastructure management.
The Smart City project aims to successfully implement seven breakthrough programs, the latest of which the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee’s congress approved for the 2016-2020 period.
The project will focus on building e-government to improve State management efficiency, transparency and publicity, and reduce inconvenience for local citizens and businesses.
Another focus of the project is to develop an open database center for all of society, except for classified information and national security matters. The database center will cover fields such as planning, education, health and traffic.
The southern city is also planning to apply smart electronics bus tickets this year, as one of four solutions to help citizens use public transport more. It is expected to contribute to achieving the city’s target of people taking 600 million bus trips this year.
