“Smart city is not only about digital advance, but means a liveable city.”, declares the Cambodian Minister of Civil Service, Prum Sokha, this morning, July 12. He emphasized this while presiding over the opening ceremony of the Virtual Conference on Smart City Planning.

According to the minister, in the future 70 to 80 percent of a country’s population would be living in a smart city, therefore development of smart cities is important. He also explained the smart city is meant to be liveable and should provide for all necessities; jobs, transport, communication, education, security, clean water, electricity, etc.

The ASEAN nations founded their Smart Cities Network during its 32nd Summit in Singapore on 2018. It is a collaborative effort of 10 cities from the ASEAN Member States (ASM) that works toward the common goal of a smart and sustainable urban development.

The Secretary of State for Interior and ASEAN Smart Cities Network National Representative of Cambodia, Ngy Chanphal, stated that the vision of Phnom Penh’s smart city action plan is to enhance the environment and improve the quality of life for its residents. Whereas, Battambang’s smart city aims to boost social responsibility and a clean environment. Siem Reap’s smart city on the other hand, is meant to transform the province into a special tourism destination with cultural harmonization.
