Sri Lanka's Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake says that once the electronic Government Procurement system is introduced, it will help government to make the public procurement more efficient and transparent.

According to the Minister, electronic Government Procurement makes public procurement more strategic and serves as an effective innovation to institute procurement reforms. It will also boost performance in terms of efficiency, transparency, competition and fairness and bring value for money as well, the Minister said.

Addressing the inaugural session of Fourth South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference in Colombo on Monday, Minister Karunanayake said Sri Lanka is hosting the conference at the right time as the World Bank indicated its support to introduce an electronic government procurement system (e-GP) in the public sector.

He also said the World Bank, USAID, ADB, EU, JICA and several other development partners have agreed to help Sri Lanka in number of Public Sector Finance Management reforms.

He said the discussion to be held in this conference and the subsequent recommendations will help tremendously for all participant countries in implementing better public procurement system to face existing challenges in improving efficiency and transparency in the system.

The four-day Conference under the theme "Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) in South Asia: Achievements, Opportunities and Challenges" turns spotlight on how E-Government Procurement can support countries in boosting the efficiency, transparency and competitiveness of their public procurement systems.
