Jeju Island in South Korea is rolling out its biometric identity verification system that may be adopted by all companies participating in the island’s smart city initiative.
The solution, of which the digital onboarding and facial recognition technology will be supplied by a company called FacePhi, will be implemented in collaboration with City Labs and aims to make the Korean island province an example of the use of a decentralized digital identity based on blockchain.
Residents will manage their ID via a digital wallet.
The South Korean government is promoting the project as a way to enable residents to access public transport, public administration services, and access control for buildings across the city. The public can manage their digital identities via a digital wallet platform.
According to the technology provider FacePhi, its technology will enable residents to share only the information they deem necessary, moving toward a consumer-authenticated, decentralized approach to digital ID.
