Cities worldwide are facing serious challenges including traffic congestion, pollution and even a shortage of resources like energy and water.
According to the United Nations, the world's population is expected to increase by two billion people in the next 30 years, to reach nine.seven billion by 2050.
And 70 percent of those people will be living in cities.
To make cities more sustainable and efficient, countries around the world are using cutting-edge technology to develop smart cities.
"The smart-city platform can improve the lives of residents by using innovative technology to create more environmentally-friendly and efficient new cities."
Smart cities are also coming to South Korea.
"We are building pilot cities in Sejong and Busan and are also trying to use smart solutions in 28 other cities. Our plan is to turn cities into smart cities to solve all of their problems."
The construction of Busan Eco Delta Smart City will be finished this December. It will use smart water management technology across the entire urban water cycle.
Around 10 percent of sewage water nationwide is reused but Busan's smart technology does much better than that.
"Most of the used water in the city is purified, then flows into the sewers. It's not drinkable, but it can be used for the landscape waterfalls or city cleaning. We are working on recycling 100 percent of the used water to clean places like parks."
It will also be 100-percent self-sufficient in energy by using renewable sources like hydro and solar energy.
Hydrothermal energy, a process of obtaining heat energy from a large body of water, is also used in this city.
The water in the river or below the ground is comparably hotter in winter and colder in summer, so those properties can help control building temperatures.
Aside from that, artificial intelligence manages the traffic light system to reduce traffic congestion and allow ambulances and police cars to reach their destination quickly.
Drones will deliver packages and robots will patrol around the city. When construction is finished, 56 house units will be lent for free.
For up to five years, people can live in the city for free in return for giving feedback.
