UAE also has the same rank as Sweden, outpacing Spain, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Estonia, Portugal and Russia in the smart electronic services index

The UAE has added another feather to its cap, by reaching the sixth position globally in the smart electronic services index and the second in the Telecommunication Infrastructure Index (TII), according to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ (DESA) E-Government Development Index (EDGI) Survey 2018.

According to the Survey, the UAE also has the same rank as Sweden, outpacing Spain, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Estonia, Portugal and Russia in the smart electronic services index. At the regional level, the UAE has reached top position in the Gulf, Arab and West Asia.

Meanwhile, the UAE has outperformed South Korea, Britain, the United States, Canada, France and Denmark in TII.

The UAE’s feat comes five years after His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai launched the smart government" project and gathered 1000 officials from the federal government to convert government services on smart phones with a deadline of 24 months for implementation.

In a series of tweets, Shaikh Mohammad said: “Five years ago, we gathered 1000 officials from the federal government, and launched "smart government" project to convert government services on smart phones, we gave them a deadline of 24 months for implementation, and promised a farewell ceremony for those who fail. Today United Nations released a report which includes 193 countries where the UAE has ranked sixth globally in smart services”.

“The UAE is the first in the Gulf, Arab and West Asia region in terms of smart services, and has advanced internationally on countries that were before us in this field. Proud of my work team and they deserve a big party to celebrate them. But we will set it after our achievement to be on first place in the world,” Shaikh Mohammad tweeted.

“More than 50 government agencies have worked tirelessly within five years to achieve the vision of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid. The UAE Smart services have been jointly developed by the government, private and academic sectors, and university students who have been the mastermind for developing application,” Mohammad Bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, said.

“In the five years only after launching the project, the UAE has been able to set a role model for the region and the world, both in terms of keeping pace with the latest global applications in government work, achieving world-class rankings in various government indicators and establishing unique standards for enhancing government performance and adopting innovative solutions so as to meet challenges, Al Gergawi added.

"The UAE’s high rankings globally and regionally reflect the progress of the country's infrastructure as we stand at the threshold of a new era of artificial intelligence, the Internet of things, massive data, and drones, He further said.
