The Uttar Pradesh government has asked divisional commissioners to ensure that the 10 smart cities in the state are completed by June 2023.

The Yogi Adityanath government has set a June 2023 deadline to complete the work of 10 smart cities of Uttar Pradesh. If the projects approved by the Central Government are not completed on time, explanation will be sought from the respective officers responsible for the projects.

The Divisional Commissioners have been directed to regularly review the projects and get them completed expeditiously.

The central government had approved 100 cities of the country to be developed as smart cities. Of these, 10 are in UP — Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Agra, Bareilly, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Aligarh, and Moradabad. A total of 259 projects have been sanctioned in these cities at a total cost of Rs 5,753 crore.

At present, 61 projects are in progress at a cost of Rs 4,229 crore. Central government officials had reviewed the progress of the ongoing works in UP in the last few days. Expressing concern over the slow progress of the works, it was directed to expedite it.

The central government has made it clear that the works will have to be completed by June 2023. After this, the central government will stop the money being given in the smart city scheme. After this, the state government will have to bear its cost itself.

Urban Development Principal Secretary Amrit Abhijat has sent a letter to the Divisional Commissioners of the cities with Smart City Project based on this.
