Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three centrally-sponsored projects under Smart City and Amrut schemes in the city on Friday. Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and Smart Roads under Smart City scheme and water treatment plant at Aruvikkara under Amrut scheme will be inaugurated on Friday. Inauguration will be held through an online platform at 4.30pm. CM Pinarayi Vijayan will preside over the function.

ICCC is envisaged to act as the nerve centre of Thiruvananthapuram city corporation and a hub for decision making and the project cost is Rs 94 crore. This project is proposed at the existing Janasevana Kendra within the corporation main building premises. The contractor has not been able to begin the work owing to stiff opposition from staff union.

ICCC will be set up to host ‘smart solutions’ for Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporation. Officials of key sections of corporation engineering (KWA), KSRTC, health, revenue, IKM and IT Mission, police, and disaster management will be seated in ICCC control room.

ICCC acts as common action point during emergency situations like natural calamities and epidemic outbreak. It will work as a control room or war room providing a single point of coordinated action and decision making among various agencies like police, civil supplies, revenue, health, fire fighting etc.

Smart Roads project has already begun. The project envisages converting the existing roads (37km) within area-based development (ABD) region of Thiruvananthapuram city to world class Smart Roads by bringing all overhead utilities underneath and undertaking road and junction improvements.

The total cost of the project is Rs. 427 crore. The major objective is to provide an overlay design for the existing road with detailed strip plans, junction designs, cycle track and footpath. At frequent intervals, landscape is to be designed to enhance the aesthetics and environment of the roads. Smart components like CCTV, smart poles and variable message boards for real time management are provided for surveillance and general safety.

With the advent of Smart Roads all the utilities like, power and OFC cables, water lines etc. will be shifted to the earmarked dedicated duct that will completely remove the need to dig the road for road maintenance and thereby preserve the aesthetics of the city roads.

The city corporation has completed the construction of the water treatment plant at Aruvikkara, under the Amrut scheme.

The Kerala water authority undertook the task of implementing the project in 2018 at an estimated cost of Rs 70 crore. Once the scheme becomes operational, the daily drinking water needs of 9.67 lakh people in Thiruvananthapuram city can be met by increasing supply. Along with that, sufficient drinking water can be supplied to important institutions in the city like VSSC, military camp, KTDC, ITDC, airport, government offices, other institutions and neighbouring panchayats.
