The Salem Corporation resumes work on smart city development projects. As quotes by a national daily, Corporation officials said that the works have been resumed with the reduced workforce at the sites to ensure social distancing and following necessary precautionary measures to prevent the spread the COVID-19.

The decisions were taken following the extension of lockdown and issuance of revised guidelines from the Centre which offered relaxation for various sectors on resuming work. The relaxations also included construction works in municipal areas where labourers are available at the site.

The construction work of two-tier bus stand at the old bus stand area and underground drainage works Second Agraharam are the smart city projects on which the civic body has resumed the work. The projects are worth Rs 92.13 crore and a temporary bus stand has also been constructed in Bose Maidan. Officials said that earlier 70-80 persons were employed for the work but considering the precautionary measures and social distancing, only 30 workers are employed.

However, at Second Agraharam site, where underground works are progressing, since most of the works are machine-based, instead of 10 workers only five persons are deployed, the officials added.
