Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL) along with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated 'zero waste project' for smart city areas. The areas under Aundh ward office will be covered in it. The project aims to cover Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Bopodi and Pashan areas to promote 100% in-situ composting, said a statement released by PSCDCL.
A workshop regarding it was organised recently in Aundh. It intended at bringing different stakeholders on one page to achieve effective coordination, understand challenges and possible solutions for garbage disposal in smart cities areas.
“The workshop started by giving overview of the project, sharing findings of survey results. Participants validated relevant data sets and gave their valuable inputs to strengthen the data. They presented their challenges and possible solutions to make garbage composting successful. A draft work plan of 3 months was also discussed,” the release added.
As per the PMC officials, around 1,600 tonnes of garbage is generated in city per day. Its disposal within city limits is a major problem. The waste is sent to Uruli-Phursungi for disposal. The PMC had started zero garbage and container free city projects in other parts of the city too. But they have proved not be very successful. “The response from citizens was not enough to make these projects successful. More awareness is needed. The decentralised garbage processing systems should be promoted across the city to make zero garbage project effective,” said a senior official of PMC.
