The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) has spent has spent six times the money used for urban rejuvenation in the 10-year UPA rule and asserted that it is not going to stop at just 100 smart cities. As many as 15 smart command and control centres (SCCC) worth Rs2,771 crores in 15 smart cities have been completed and work orders for setting up 31 integrated command and control centre have been issued. In 18 cities, it is under tendering process. Due to this, crime rate has been decreased in these smart cities.
According to HUA, smart roads in 21 cities worth Rs795 crore have been completed, work orders amounting to Rs7,626 crore have been issued in 54 cities and tendering worth Rs5,942 crore is under progress in 40 cities under smart city mission (SCM). As per latest data, smart waste water projects in four cities worth Rs326 crore have been completed, work orders amounting to Rs5,342 crore have been issued in 41 cities and tendering worth Rs3,860 crore is under progress in 23 cities.
"Similarly, smart water projects in 20 cities worth Rs1,135 crore have been completed, work orders amounting to Rs9,382 crore have been issued in 49 cities and tendering worth Rs4,239 crore is under progress in 29 cities. Impactful projects in 18 cities worth Rs232 crore have been completed, work orders amounting to Rs4,610 crore have been issued in 37 cities and tendering worth Rs3291 crore is under progress in 20 cities," the HUA Ministry said.
Earlier, addressing the "Second National Apex Conference of CEOs of Smart Cities", the Union HUA minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the amount spent on urban rejuvenation in the 10-year UPA rule, from 2004 to 2014... It's around Rs1.5 lakh crore. The money spent between June 2015 and February 2019 is six times that amount. It's around Rs8.6 lakh crore.
Puri said that the rapid rate of progress of the mission is an answer to the "cynics and naysayers who doubted what we are doing". "Till September 2017, projects worth Rs21,500 crore were tendered. The value of the projects tendered since then is Rs1.22 lakh crore," he said and claimed that India's Smart City Mission is one of the fastest implemented projects in the world.
"This is only the beginning. As we become a $10-trillion economy by 2030, we are not going to stop at 100 cities, we cannot. These 100 cities will become the template that this is how you do it," Puri said.
On the Swachh Bharat mission, Puri said the Government achieved the target of constructing five lakh community and public toilets well before the October 2, 2019 deadline.
The Minister added that the goal of constructing 67 lakh individual household toilets would be accomplished by next month.
"We were told one crore additional dwelling units were needed to be built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by 2022. As of February 2019, we have sanctioned 79 per cent of them," Puri said.
He also stressed the need for people to make behavioural changes, saying smart cities need smart citizens.
"Smart cities at the end of the day need smart people and smartness in terms of people depends on behavioral changes," he said while expressing disappointment over commuters not using a helmet in smart cities like Surat and Rajkot.
