The mobile app will provide nine types of services in both Tamil and English

The Agriculture Department, as a part of an e-governance initiative, has developed a mobile application – ‘UZHAVAN’ – to enable farmers to access its services and get vital information.

According to a press release, the app can be downloaded from Google Play Store on their mobile phones.

The app will provide nine types of services to farmers in both Tamil and English. Through this app, farmers can get information on agriculture subsidy schemes of the government. They can get information on eligibility criteria for availing subsidy under various schemes implemented by the agriculture, horticulture and agriculture engineering departments.

Farmers can register for availing subsidy extended for high value agriculture machinery such as tractors, power tillers and infrastructure facilities such as shade nets, green house through their mobile phones without visiting the offices. On registration, the farmers will be provided a seniority number through SMS to their mobile phones.

The application will also enable farmers to get information on crop insurance and availability of major fertilizers on real time basis in 11,980 cooperative and private fertilizer shops functioning in the State and purchase crop-specific fertilizers from nearby sales centres. This would help in maintaining transparency in fertilizer distribution, the release said.

Similarly, they can get information on seed availability in government and private depots that are located nearby on real time basis. They can contact the respective managers of the centres to purchase the required seeds. The mobile numbers and address would be provided through the app.

The app will also enable farmers to hire agriculture machinery from 76 custom hiring centres of the Agriculture Department and 625 private centres in the State. Farmers can also comprehend market prices of agriculture commodities and sell their produce in the regulated markets where the market price fixed is high and benefit.

The mobile application would also provide weather advisory bulletin for four days. Through this, farmers can decide upon important agriculture activities such as raising nursery, fertilisation, irrigation, harvest and drying of produce based on four days forecast in rainfall, wind and other important weather status in their areas.

To expedite the agriculture extension services provided to farmers, the names of the respective assistant agriculture officers along with their mobile numbers, and date of visit by the officers as per the fixed schedule can be known through this app, the release said.
