To improve the delivery of public services, Tamil Nadu will offer over 300 services through the e-District programme.

This is in addition to the over 165 services of various government departments being accessed through Common Service Centres, said Tamil Nadu IT minister M Manikandan.

The State government has taken many initiatives to improve the delivery of public services and simplify the process of accessing them, he said while inaugurating the ‘FICCI E-commerce Summit 2017 and Exhibition’, powered by The Hindu Business Line.

Tamil Nadu plans to introduce mobile governance as a platform, thanks to the widespread use of mobile phones by citizens across income segments.

Mobile phone has become easiest mode of communication and is available at a low cost. With available technologies, it is now possible for the public to access services, he said. The State has also taken steps to provide government services in electronic mode through Arasu e-Sevai centres. Currently, there are 11,117 such centres functioning across the State, he said.

On improving software business and creating employment, Manikandan said the government had allotted 1,322 acres of land to establish Special Economic Zones in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, Tirunelveli and Hosur.

Of this, 946 acres have been utilised to set up software companies. The government, he said, invested ₹495 crore in setting up the SEZs, which have helped create 68,900 direct and 1.37 lakh indirect jobs.

In 2015-16, software exports from the SEZs was ₹17,266 crore, he said.

To build entrepreneurial capabilities, a start-up warehouse has been set up at Tidel Park in Chennai and another is coming up in Coimbatore, Manikandan said.
