The upgradation work of State Data Centre to impart better Information Technology (IT) related services to different government departments is in full swing.

The state government, set to upgrade the infrastructure as well as expand the Data Centre, will spend around Rs 56.64 crore at the end of the project.

A source said: "The project is on the verge of its successful completion. The upgradation work is supposed to be ready by the end of May this year. But it will probably take some extra weeks to be fully complete."

The source claimed: "The first phase of the Data Centre has completed five years in which it gave uninterrupted service to several government departments. It has played a role of 'host' for many applications. The upgraded version will be more advanced and equipped."

The government had set up the State Data Centre (SDC) in 2009-2010 under the national e-governance plan to facilitate the hosting of IT services for different government departments. "The process of hosting is actually 'storage' for website on a server so that it can be accessed through the Internet. As a hosting service provider, SDC has played a crucial role in the government sector. The upgraded version of SDC will be smarter in its action," the source said.

It may be mentioned that the 'e-governance' has been one among the core reforms that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee successfully implemented in Bengal. Now, most of the state-run services can be opted via e-governance, which is more easy, fast and apt. "Consolidating those services, applications and infrastructure to provide efficient electronic delivery of G2G (Government to Government), G2C (Government to Citizen) and G2B (Government to Business), SDC plays a leading role. The latest technologies will include a robust and secure cloud computing platform, which provides hosting service, for seamless maintenance and management of huge government data," the source added. A state Secretariat source alleged that the infrastructure created by erstwhile Left Front government is no longer a smart process. The technology has already reached a new high. Looking at the future, we had to upgrade the State Data Centre (SDC)," he said.
