A comprehensive plan on the fourth industrial revolution (IR4.0) and digital roadmap will be announced by month-end in an effort to ensure Malaysians have access to better connectivity with a wider coverage.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (picture) said the government will focus on five components for the roadmap which are digital talent development, emerging technology, the economic prospects along with the society and governmental part of it.

“We have had one month of fruitful discussion among all the stakeholders and players on what needs to be done until at least the next two or three years.

“If everything moves according to plan, the government will be announcing a proper comprehensive IR4.0 and digital roadmap by the third week of this month,” he said in his keynote address at the Invest Malaysia 2020 conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Saifuddin said the government is also expediting the improvement of connectivity for both fibre optic and 4G to ensure that the 5G rollout in the country will be done efficiently.

This will then benefit the consumers without incurring a significant increase in cost of service, while enabling industries to rollout their respective solution utilising 5G, said Saifuddin.

“Such a healthy ecosystem will contribute significantly to the national agenda of digital Malaysia and thereby the national GDP,” he said.

He said the government takes the development of the 5G network seriously and is focused on the nation’s digital trajectory, as exhibited in the 5G Demonstration Projects that have been done over the years.

The projects involve nine verticals such as agriculture, digital healthcare, education, entertainment, manufacturing and processing, oil and gas, smart city, smart transportation and tourism.

To date, there are 71 5G use cases demonstrated across seven states with a total industry investment of RM131 million led by Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi.Com Bhd, edotco Group Sdn Bhd, Maxis Bhd, Petroliam Nasional Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, YTL Corp Bhd and their ecosystem partners consisting of digital solution providers, ministries, agencies, integrators and vendors, he said.

“These projects focus on facilitating and cultivating the development of a holistic and inclusive 5G ecosystem, which stimulates demand as well as adoption.

“As various industries adopt 5G, it could positively influence other industries’ contribution rate to the GDP,” added Saifuddin.

Separately, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the ministry is engaging with stakeholders regarding the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership before deciding on its ratification.

He said there are sensitive issues that need to be addressed such as government procurement before the agreement can be formalised.

“There is no timeline imposed (on the ratification) and my ministry will continue the engagement with stakeholders,” he told reporters after the conference yesterday.

Azmin added that the ministry is now focusing on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which is in its final stage of discussion.

“We are still finalising the details, but we are optimistic that we would be able to sign the agreement by November this year,” he said.
