Digital Penang Sdn Bhd, an agency under the Penang government, has announced technologist Tony Yeoh as its new chief executive officer.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Yeoh has vast experience, having lived and worked in seven countries in Asia and has now returned to contribute to his home state.

Founded this year, Digital Penang Sdn Bhd was formed to accelerate efforts in pursuing opportunities in the digital economy as well as to promote a digitally engaged society.

Digital Penang has four pillars of focus, namely infrastructure, economy, governance and community.

“For digital transformation to happen, infrastructure in digital networks is a key priority, hence issues of accessibility and internet speed will be addressed to achieve digital inclusion, ” said Chow at a press conference at Komtar on Thursday.

He said many agencies and departments have started multiple digital initiatives, especially under the framework of Smart City.

“In order to align them to the Penang2030 vision, Digital Penang was set up as an umbrella organisation to oversee and integrate these initiatives towards a common structure and agenda.

“The key focus in the digital economy will be to drive digitalisation and innovation amongst the small and medium enterprises through technology to raise competitiveness and scale, ” he added.

Chow said manufacturing, especially electrical and electronics and medical devices, have been a strong engine of growth and has earned Penang its reputation as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.

“Another key focus in the digital economy is to develop anchors in the more software-oriented sectors especially deep technology such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and analytics, ” he said.
