The first two LinkNWK kiosks in Newark, N.J., have been activated.

Plans to place 45 kiosks offering free gigabit Wi-Fi, mobile-device charging and other services on sidewalks across the five wards of city were first announced in April.

The kiosks are made by Intersection, a smart city technology firm that has created similar networks in New York and London. Newark, however, will be the first city to offer the Link Wi-Fi app that provides an encrypted connection between the a user's device and the network provided by the kiosks. This is designed to prevent devices from connecting to “evil twin” networks that can allow hackers to view and steal user information.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology plans to partner with Intersection to find innovative use cases. "We envision possibilities that will improve transportation, community health, education, public safety, real estate development, and many other aspects of business and life throughout our city's downtown and its wards,” NJIT President Joel S. Bloom said in a statement.
