PGI has been doing pioneering work in sharing its expertise with developing nations like Afghanistan and Bhutan through telemedicine. A separate centre to connect Saarc countries to the telemedicine project was set up last year. Bhutan was the first nation to receive consultations under this project, after its Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital got connected with PGI. Recently, Afghanistan has also been linked. In the last few weeks, PGI has shared lectures of experts in various fields with Afganistan, sharing valuable contents on healthcare.
According to additional professor Meenu Singh, Coordinator of the SAARC Telemedicine Network, telemedicine involves health care applications of telecommunication technologies, including television and the Internet. It offers cost-effective opportunities for improving quality and access to health care. Besides taking care of home-bound patients, it also includes electronic transmission of patient records and X-rays, expert consultations, and education for health professionals, including those in rural and medically under-served communities.
With good infrastructure in place and a dedicated team, the institute is now entertaining tedious cases requiring consultation and digital transfer of clinical data. Approximately 2,560 cases have been solved through the Centre for Telemedicine.
