President of Iran Urban Economics Scientific Association has said smartphones are currently the heart of smart cities.

Hossein Mohammadpour Zarandi told reporters on Tuesday that 660 million people owned smart cell phones; “this figure shows an upsurge from 140 million people 2008-2012 worldwide; therefore, it seems that smart phone is the main tool of smart city,” he added.

“The concept of smart city takes advantages of ITC leading to the improvement of citizens’ quality of life along with keeping sustainability feature. Smart city tries to integrate various data and information, and the idea of smart city has been discussed since 1994. However, many of the world’s large companies moved toward being smart after global financial crisis in 2008,” Zarandi asserted.

“Smart city has six aspects: smart economy, smart mobility, smart environment, smart governance, smart people, and smart life. It has been implemented in many important cities such as Dubai, Cairo, Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo,” said the IUESA president.

“According to figures for 2013, 150 smart projects were being carried out in the world, with most underway in EU, Asia, and North America; Seoul is one of the pioneer cities of the concept of smart city; it has been the best technology-based city in the world after 2010, ranking the first place in e-government,” Zarandi detailed.

“One of the applications of mobile phones in smart city is to improve banking system and transactions with citizens. Digital technologies allow banks to redefine their relations with their clients and to communicate them in a new way based on data and information,” he concluded.
