The Liberian Leader made the pronouncement at the dedication of a Local ACE Terminal Station at the Liberia Telecommunications Corporation Technical Office on Broad Street in Monrovia.
President Sirleaf continued that with the arrival and subsequent start of the cable system Liberia would be entering the modern age when it comes to information, communication technology (ICT).
She added that the E-Government (the system's name for government when the system is employed) would assist all ministries; educators would be able to use distant learning enhancement, medical students would be able to receive up to date medical info among others.
The Africa Coast to Europe Submarine Fiber Optic Cable System when fully operational would make internet access and speed across the sub-region. The first phase which brought the cable to Liberia in November 2011 gave rise to the second phase with the dedication of the Local ACE Terminal Station. The third phase is expected to take place in November 2012 with other West African countries setting up terminal stations and the switch being turned on here in Liberia for faster and more efficient internet access to West Africa. The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Dr. Fredrick Norkeh during the program stated that many jobs would be created when the system is fully operational. He concluded that this was part of the government's 150 days deliverables.
For her part the Acting World Bank Country Manager, Pauline LittleJohn said that the bank has already disbursed 72.3% of funding for the full implementation of the project, adding that major investments are to soon come when the cable becomes operational.
The Local ACE Terminal Station is the storage space for the cable system and when ready for operation service providers would link with officials to get faster internet service to their customers; however all West African countries have to create their own terminals before the system would be turned on here in Liberia by the Liberian President.
