Visiting Muscat Municipality’s web page over any mobile device will soon be hassle-free as the civic body is in the process of revamping its website so that it can adapt to any screen size.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Nihad Juma al Belushi, senior e-Services specialist in the Information Systems Directorate of the Muscat Municipality said, “We are redesigning our website to make it compatible with any device - whether it’s a personal computer, laptop, mobile phone or a tablet.

“These days most of the people access websites on mobile devices. They don’t have time to access a website at a cybercafé or on a personal computer at home. It’s a big turnoff if the website is not compatible across devices.”

Nihad said that mobile users want websites to be compatible so that the transition from one page to other is seamless.

“Mobile subscribers have outnumbered the population of Oman. Almost every one has a smartphone these days. From small screens, mobile users are moving on to phones which have bigger screens. So it’s important that your website can adapt to any screen size,” she said.

She said Muscat Municipality is slowly but steadily moving towards e-Governance for all its services.

“It was brought to our notice by several users that the website of Muscat Municipality is not visible properly particularly on smartphones.

People have to scroll left and right several times to access the web page properly. We decided to redesign the web page, so that it automatically responds to the user’s preference.”

The new design will be based on a technology called Responsive Web Design, she said.

“The website will be more organised. Now, we have e-Services under different icons. The new website will have a single icon from where one can access all e-Services. So, a user will not have to scan the whole website to access any service. The new website will go online by the end of this year,” Nihad said.
