State is now digitalising all national records in a move to protect records and boost development, says Solicitor-General and Acting Permanent Secretary for Communications Sharvada Sharma.

Mr Sharma was speaking at the opening of a three-day Capacity Building Training Workshop on E-government development in Pacific Small Island Developing States that began in Suva this morning.

"Over the last few years, the Fijian Government has also made substantial investments in providing greater access to information technology to ordinary Fijians as well," Mr Sharma said.

"Furthermore, the digitisation of the Vola ni Kawa Bula records or birth records of all indigenous landowning units is on the verge of completion and information will be available on real time basis.

"This will greatly assist the indigenous Fijians in many ways including assisting other entities such as TLTB in distribution of proceeds such as rents and royalties.

"In addition, we are currently undergoing digitisation in the registration of land titles to ensure that land registration and dealings can be done online and with greater efficiency.

"We are also working on digitisation of the registration of companies and businesses to ensure that company records are available online and to ensure that people can register or search for company details online.

"One of the other equally important task in e-governance that the Fijian Government is undertaking is the digitization of our laws. Our laws were last revised in 1985.

"With the help of expert law publishers, we are in the process of updating our laws and making them available on line. This will no doubt assist all Fijians in accessing laws and knowing more about their legal rights and obligations.
