Government has allocated $43 billion under devolution for next year to local authorities towards the upgrading of infrastructure to meet the ongoing development agenda of smart cities, and no city or town should lag behind as the country moves to achieve an upper middle income economy by 2030, President Mnangagwa said yesterday.
The President, who was officially opening a new-look Kudzanai Long Distance Bus Terminus in Gweru, said devolution funds were enough for local authorities to modernise and embrace the smart city concept, with the Government taking over the development of major national projects such as roads and other infrastructure.
President Mnangagwa has said Government has allocated $43 billion in devolution funds to local authorities to upgrade infrastructure to meet the ongoing development agenda of creating smart cities.
Government approved the smart cities concept last year in line with the vision of having an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

Government is working on embracing the smart city concept as a prerequisite for leaving no-one behind, part of President Mnangagwa’s thrust of improving people’s livelihoods.
A smart city is one that uses information communication technologies to improve operational efficiency, share information with the public and provide a better quality of government service and citizen welfare.
Community information centres (CIC) being commissioned in various parts of the country can promote e-agriculture, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has said.
In his speech at the commissioning of the Rafingora CIC on Friday, Potraz director-general Gift Machengete said: “Rafingora is a predominantly farming community and the benefits that this centre will bring to the farmers are enormous.
