The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has shifted to the use of smart technologies that promote sustainability, public safety, energy efficiency, reduce congestion, ensure smart transportation, smart parking and intelligent water and sanitation services to improve on its service delivery.

Presenting his Valedictory Report for the period 2018 to 2023, the outgoing mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni said, guided by their goal of being a leading, smart, transformative city by 2024, the local authority was focused on the use of smart technologies that help create a better quality of life for the citizens.

Redcliff Town which is eyeing city status by the year 2030 has availed at least 250 hectares of land for the development of a smart city.

Speaking during a tour of devolution projects recently, Redcliff’s Town Clerk Gilson Chakauaya said the local authority has since forwarded applications for the ambitious project to the central government.

The Victoria Falls City Council (VFCC) has moved an inch closer to becoming a smart city after completing construction of a low-cost engineered landfill and commencing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Wash) project to improve sanitation services and solid waste management.

The local authority last week launched a US$4 million water reservoir project in Mkhosana, as the first phase of the grand US$18 million Wash project that is set to permanently end water problems in the tourism city.
