The Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology, Mr Nonofo Molefhi says an increase in the use of ICT by companies and Batswana can help Botswana attain a knowledge economy.

Mr Molefhi said this at the launch of AdaptIT Botswana, which was held at Lansmore Hotel recently.

He said the government was receptive to investment in the information technology field from the private sector, such as AdaptIT.

"I have to hasten to emphasise that in appreciating and adopting the knowledge capital and capital investments from companies coming from more developed countries, it is important to illustrate a clear mandate to empower the citizens of Botswana in order to ensure seamless continuity and sustenance of the growth of this nature," he said.

He said with the proliferation of ICT technologies in the early 2000s, the government saw the need to build capacity training through various initiatives aimed at training Batswana to invest in the infrastructure that would support IT knowledge transformation and exponential growth of innovation.

"I believe many of you are aware of government initiatives and other initiatives that are geared at ensuring that we keep up with the times, such as the Connecting Communities Programme, Kitsong Centres, Thuto Net, Government Online, the Botswana Innovation Hub, the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation and the formation of the Botswana Fibre Network (BOFINET) company," he said.

He underscored that e-Government was the overarching strategic driver for most of the initiatives, adding that the ICT transformation received support from the highest level in government and the highest office in the land."I understand the deep industry expertise across various industry areas that AdaptIT has a great IT track record in deploying corporate social responsibilities (CSR) that there will be knowledge transfer and capacity building by the company, particularly for graduates in the ICT fraternity who need all the guidance they get in the rigour of solution-focused application development," he said.

He said it was a commendable effort which would also be made easier as the company already has knowledge centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and currently serving over 1 000 young people in those localities.

For his part, the managing director of AdaptIT Botswana said as an innovative information technology services and specialised solution providers to five continents, AdaptIT knows the value of keeping people at the centre of everything they do.

"Building or services and solutions around our client's specific needs is what has earned us the secure market position we hold today," he said.

With over 700 employees operating from major centres in South Africa, and Botswana, the company provides a variety of specialised turnkey IT solutions and services to some of the most successful organisations in over 38 countries worldwide.

Their offering spans from consulting and application design, to delivery and support, all of which focuses on delivering profitable turnover growth and return on investment for all clients.
