Transforming Government since 2001
Qatar has made great strides in setting-up e-government, adopting the latest technology and is currently rapidly expanding the number of services being provided, Ali Ahmed Al-Kuwari, General Manager of Technology and Operations at Qatar National Bank (QNB) said yesterday.

Al-Kuwari told a news conference that providing numerous electronic services is not an end in itself, but the idea is that a wider base of ordinary users utilises these services. He also said that QNB has been instrumental in the e-government development in the country, being the sole payment service provider of the e-government.

QNB direct debit system is used by enterprises linked to e-government and also ordinary customers making transactions for services provided by e-government.

Marwan Marouf Mahmoud, Assistant General Manager, Information Technology, Mohammed Ali Al-Khulaifi, Director of Electronic banking Operations Department and John Hackwood, AGM Corporate Communications Corporate Communications at QNB also attended the press conference.

Al-Kuwari pointed out that in view of its importance, QNB supports the upcoming one-day 'e-government-The Challenges' symposium scheduled to be held in Doha on April 14.

The event is aimed at bringing together all Arab e-governments along with experts in the field so as to carry out the e-government projects in the most effective and efficient manner.

Experts and senior level executives from e-government from Qatar and GCC countries, GBM company, Qpost, Qtel and several local banks and international organisations will review and discuss their experiences.

The symposium will also provide e-governments and enterprises an opportunity to display the efficiency of their systems and services.

Topics to be covered at the symposium include the infrastructure necessary to establish e-governments, a case study of the Qatari e-government that is already in place.

QNB is expected to present a paper on e-payment gateway, while other participating institutions will discuss such issues as laws covering e-government as laid down by international e-commerce firms, co-operation between Arab e-governments, challenges confronting e-governments, post as a mode of enhancing services and purchases and the role of communication in further developing e-government.
