HCMC has been attempting to develop into a smart city with the front solution of applying technologies to solve urgent issues, needing the community especially Vietnamese technology businesses to join hands and provide specific solutions and willing to give them financial assistance to develop products for the purpose, said deputy chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee Tran Vinh Tuyen at a Friday meeting.

At the meeting hosted by the Department of Communications and Information and Quang Trung Software City, Mr. Tuyen said that the city is now focusing on building the smart city project and will soon issue specific norms and standards for each field. From that, businesses can develop connectivity solutions.

He affirmed that the city’s target is not to invite other countries to introduce their technologies for the smart city. The municipal authorities hoped to receive Vietnamese technology products and willing to provide businesses with financial assistance to develop such products.

In short term, the city will organize a fair for local firms to advertise their technologies and in the future a smart technology exchange will be developed, he revealed.

Deputy director of the Department of Communications and Information Le Quoc Cuong said that since October last year, the city People’s Committee had conducted surveys to build the smart city project in the phase of 2017-2025 with the attendance of specialized associations and technology firms relating to applications, infrastructures and human resources.

The surveys aim to build some projects and programs in need of immediate implementation or pilot launch in 2017and 2018 to solve currently urgent issues of the city. From that, businesses can develop contents and solutions to comprehensively attend the smart city or provide short term subjects.

In addition, the department will directly place an order to businesses to develop e-government and solve welfare issues, he added.

Director of the department Nguyen Viet Dung said that to make the orders efficient, HCMC needed to soon build specific regulations and standards from architect to communication and data.

The city’s government must clarify these regulations and standards to create a foundation for associations and businesses to develop suitable technologies and solutions, intensify connectivity with business and schools to have human resource for the project’s implementation. The door should be opened for enterprises to provide solutions for the public administration market.

At the meeting, many IT associations and businesses proposed measures to develop the smart city such as a city level data warehouse and digitalization in waste collection and treatment to make the city greener and cleaner.

They also introduced initiatives and solutions to reform and improve management quality, build e-government, boost administrative reform and apply smart city, smart traffic and smart education models. Besides there were solutions for food safety and hygiene control, fire fighting and prevention and rescue, education and job training quality improvement, human resource training under international standards.
