The Universal Service Fund Company’s (USF’s) 41st board of directors (BoD) meeting has approved an award of Rural Telephony and E-services Project encompassing Sibi, Loralai, Killa Saifullah and Barkhan districts.
The USF BoD meeting, which was held on Thursday, was headed by Information Technology (IT) Minister Anusha Rahman.
The meeting overviewed main efforts and development of the telecommunication services in un-served and under-served areas throughout the length and breadth of the country. The project has a subsidy value of Rs 3,195 million, benefiting an un-served population of around 500,000 and covering 505 un-served Mauzas and an un-served area of 23,617 sq km.
The BoDs also approved a special project for the establishment of computer labs in 12 Baitul Maal sweet homes orphanages to facilitate the underprivileged children.
Considering women and young girls, another special project to use information and communications technologies (ICTs), to empower young girls, was approved. The project focuses on computer literacy and computer programming skills to be imparted to young girls in un-served and underserved areas. The computer labs would be established in the women empowerment centres run by the Pakistan Baitul Maal. The training content would be prepared in collaboration with the Virtual University.
