According to the report, Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy, Pir Mazhar ul Haq made the announcement during a meeting of senior officials of the education department. The new system, according to the minister, is aimed at controlling the drop-out rate of students, and to manage the attendance of absentee teachers.
Initially, the systems will be installed in phases starting with libraries and will then be expanded to cover all institutions.
Workforce management and attendance systems are being implemented in education institutions with increasing regularity, though they’re not always accepted warmly. As reported previously in BiometricUpdate, the executive council at the University of Delhi recently approved the administration to move ahead with the implementation of biometrics to track its faculty, though in 2009, the Delhi’s University Teacher’s Association went on strike in protest of the move.
In England, students at Newcastle University rejected the school’s proposal to install biometric systems to monitor course attendance on the school’s campus.
