Nigerian student, others win at DStv Eutelsat awards
To facilitate the primary goal of broadband in the country, the Ministry of Communication is set launch an e-governance strategy in two months, according to the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, at the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards held in Lagos.
The objective of electronic or e-governance, also known as G2G, is to support and simplify governance for government, citizens and businesses. It is also meant to create the right policy and institutional frameworks, and to maximise the effectiveness of ICT initiatives within government, while also integrating organisational silos and deliver citizen services through common channels.
Speaking at the event through the Permanent Secretary, Sunny Echono, he said: “In our sphere, we need to take the lead in communication by leveraging on ICT. To achieve this, we will need the support of the civil societies, Multichoice and Nigerians by encouraging the ICT ecosystem to share best practices and sustainable policies. Furthermore, to ensure our primary goal of broadband will be achieved in the shortest time, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) along with Nigeria Communication Satellite (NigComSat), as we are on the threshold to launch the e-governance in two months.’’
Addressing the DStv Eutelsat Star Awardees, he noted, “Adjudging from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies present at this event, it is evident this sixth edition shows sustained interest from African youths. This adds fresh impetus to the mission shared by MultiChoice and Eutelsat, to encourage young minds to positively change their world via innovative thinking in science and technology.”
For this edition, the task was: envision the role played by satellite technology in the Africa of the future. From the 1000 entrants across 20 countries, Leoul Mesfin from Ethiopia won with his entry that considered continental and country specific needs and closely aligns to the topic while Davids Bwana from Tanzania became the runner-up.
