About 22,600 government officials will be trained on e-government, Minister of Communication Technology, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, has said.
Shittu spoke at the ongoing Fourth In-Country training on e-governance capacity building programme in Abuja.
The training is organized by the Korean government through the Korean International Corporation Agency (KOICA) 2013-2018) training programme for Nigeria.
Already, 409 persons have been trained in Nigeria in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd In-Country Training, while 91 others were trained in Seoul, Korea for two weeks. Also as part of the Train the Trainers programme, another seven government officers were trained in e-Government Master’s degree programme in Korea. The fourth In-Country training, which will last for three days, has 91 participants.
The training, the minister said, will allow for the deployment of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in governance across the country.
Already, the prepared e-government master plan for the country is awaiting the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The master plan was to be presented at yesterday’s FEC meeting for consideration and approval, but for the absence of the minister.
The minister, who presented a key note address at the opening ceremony of the fourth training session said the target was to have 200,600 trained officers across the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communication Technology, Mr. Sunday Echono, also noted that by its true nature, e-government applications cut across multiple agencies of government and they easily allow for savings through economics of scale.
He said the training would support the Nigerian government for the capacity building of e-government.
He announced that the government was working towards establishing e-government training centre (ETC) for capacity building for civil servants, noting that the process of construction is ongoing.
The minister stressed that “ we believe that robust implementation and adoption of e-government will help improve efficiency and transparency in public administration, while also increasing development of nation and growth of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.”
In his speech, Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. NIH Kyu-duk, said: “The ripple effect of this pool of ever more competent government officers who are adept at the tools of 21st century e-governance will, without a doubt, lead to a more efficient, transparent and convenient public service in Nigeria.”
The envoy also added that “ the fourth In-Country training programme represents yet another milestone in the success of the project for capacity building of e-government in Nigeria, whose overall objective is to improve the efficiency and transparency of the public administration in Nigeria. “
The training is part of the five years (2013-2018) project component of the Project for Capacity Building of e-Government in Nigeria, with overarching objective of improving the efficiency and transparency of the public service administration in Nigeria.
KOICA is spending $8.56 million US dollars for the implementation of the project which includes drafting an e-government Master Plan which was completed and handed over to the government in 2015, establishment of e-Government Training Centre and Capacity Building Programme for 22, 625 government officers.
