The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that digital economy was its top most priority, emphasising that an effort towards achieving this was in top gear.

Disclosing this yesterday at the Nigeria Digital Innovation Conference 2016, that took place at Bayero University, Kano, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Umar Garba Dambatta, assured that NCC was up and doing engaging infrastructural development through the use of information and communication technology (ICT).

Dambatta insisted that, digital engagement in the areas of economy, social and infrastructure among others was necessary for the nation’s growth and development.

“We are creating an environment that can help in realising the digital economy. We have all sorts of environment, example, economic environment, academic environment, social environment and others, which is the main issue of broadband intervention, ” he said, stressing that they needed penetration of broadband spectrum for an effective and efficient use of broadband for the national economy.

He said that when he came in as the EVC, the broadband penetration was 10 per cent, and within a year, it rose to 14 per cent. “We are trying to reach 30 per cent, which translates into 48 million Nigerians, by 2018. This is the target set by the Federal Government, ” he stated. He assured that they would engage consumers in that effort.

On his part, the Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said his administration was committed to e-governance, for proficient delivery of service to the state. “In almost all aspects of our governance, we embrace e-governance initiative. We also directed all ministries to be committed to the new initiative,” he disclosed.
