As Nigeria joins the world to mark the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2015, the federal government has restated its commitment to the development and promotion of local content in the ICT space for job and wealth creation.

This was disclosed by the minister of communication technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, during a media interaction with journalists yesterday in Abuja.

Speaking at the event which coincided with the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with the theme “Telecommunications and ICTs: Drivers of Innovation,” the minister represented by the director of eGovernment, Dr Tope Fashedemi, said the ministry is promoting the development and contribution of local content in the ICT space and has facilitated the issuance of the Nigerian Content Guidelines for the ICT sector to stimulate participation of local players and companies to enable job and wealth creation.

Listing the benefits which the ICT has enabled the nation to achieve, Johnson described it as a modern tool for wealth creation, employment generation, improving efficiency and increasing productivity for better life and economic empowerment.

“There is no doubt that advancement in technology, especially in telecommunications and ICTs over the past two decades have helped in accelerating the creativity and innovations we are witnessing in the diverse sectors of our economy and in shaping the way we live,” she said.

Listing areas where the effects of liberalisation have affected the nation, the minister said that Nigeria has made rapid advancements in the areas of broadband internet and eGovernment. Both are innovations driven by telecoms and ICTs.
