Brunei Darussalam with its ASEAN neighbours support the development of smart and sustainable cities in the region by utilising technology, to tackle the opportunities and issues caused by rapid urbanisation, thereby improving the lives of ASEAN citizens.

This was said by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof in a pre-recorded video aired live during the ASEAN Smart City Development Cooperation Forum in Seoul, Korea yesterday.

The forum, hosted by the Presidential Committee on New Southern Policy of Korea, and co-organised by Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements and World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation, focussed on Korea’s cooperation plan for ASEAN smart cities through official development assistance.

It was officiated with opening remarks by President of Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements Hyun Soo Kang and Deputy Secretary General of Presidential Committee on New Southern Policy Byung-Hwa An.

In his capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) 2021 and Brunei Darussalam National Representative to the ASCN, Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri shared that ASCN is a collaborative platform where 26 cities from the 10 ASEAN member states work towards the common goal of smart and sustainable urban development.

Although considered a regional platform, ASCN reaches global status thanks to collaborations from external partners, private-sector solution providers and multilateral financial institutions.

The permanent secretary also shared that ASCN has developed an ASEAN Smart Cities Framework which serves as a guide for the development of smart cities of ASEAN member states, outlining strategic outcomes and focus areas when implementing the projects.

In addition, he encouraged to continue building on the partnership and collaboration to the common goal of building smart cities towards improving citizens’ quality of life, in line with the theme of ASEAN 2021, ‘We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper’.

The forum’s programme included presentations and interactive panel discussion on forecasted smart city development demand within ASEAN and Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) programme. The forum aims to broaden understanding of ASEAN Smart City development dynamics by identifying the needs of ASEAN cities and advancing ASCN’s global cooperation trajectory.

ASCN members, Korea’s and foreign government agencies, private and public institutions as well as ODA-related ministries in Korea attended the forum.
