South Korea's state land development agency will create a smart city infrastructure in a special economic zone near Manila. The smart city linked to an international airport would become a logistics hub city with infrastructure for tourism, recreation aviation maintenance.
Under an agreement with Clark Development Corporation (CDC), Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) will build the smart city in the Clark Freeport Zone in Mabalacat some 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of Manila. The zone is designed to attract various industries by providing incentives. A railroad will connect the zone with Manila.
A smart city allows citizens to enjoy a convenient life by solving traffic, environmental issues and facility inefficiency using advanced information and communication technology (ICT). Artificial intelligence and big data process real-time information collected through sensors and allow city operators to make quick choices to resolve problems or analyze data for future plans.
"We hope that the two countries will promote exchanges through the development of a smart city and diverse projects," LH head Kim Hyun-joon said in a statement on April 15.
South Korea is in an early stage of smart city development where cities are connected via wireless networks to efficiently manage various urban problems. In October 2020, LH partnered with the city of Cusco in southeastern Peru to build a smart city on the site of an old airport that will go out of service if a new airport is completed.
