The Maharashtra Government has launched its blockchain platform to increase the efficiency of its e-governance sector. This will provide enough support to increase the productivity of the state’s financial sector.

The platform has been utilized in various economic departments of the state. This includes supply chain, vehicle registration, financial marketing, document management system, and other economic services. Implementation of the system is aimed at increasing the efficiency of these departments through blockchain advancements.

According to a recent report, the state government had allotted around 10 Crore rupees to execute the present project in the present financial year. However, only 4 Crore rupees were utilized to adopt the blockchain technology from the allotted sum.

The rest of the financial resources shall be utilized based on the needs and necessities arising throughout the implementation. This ensures the existence of an adequate plan for optimum utilization of financial resources.

Comments of Authorities

The Principal Secretary of the State’s Information Technology Department, Mr.Srinivas recently declared the state’s initiative, in August 2019, to adopt the blockchain platform to improve the efficiency of the state as a whole.

He also added that the technology had already been implemented in various fields, including the health sector, document management sector, and Supply Chain. Apart from that, it was underlined by the secretary that the technology was adopted across several government departments to speed up the administration process. This must-have probably inspired his decision to adopt the same.

Concluding his statement, he emphasized the importance of an appropriate regulatory system and the state’s plan to employ the same within a period of five to six months from the date of adoption of such technology.

Adding on to support the present scheme, Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, declared in an interview about the Union Government’s plan to launch a National Level Framework to regulate the technology and implement the same.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) considers the blockchain technology as the most significant piece of advancement that can suite the existing modern technologies. Keeping that in mind, the Ministry is preparing the paper to employ the regulatory framework.

The present recognition and support were previously extended to other projects, including Distributed Centre of Excellence in Blockchain Technology and the Institute for Development & Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT).

This adoption is primarily based on the technology’s ability to reduce the gap between the Government and its citizens, thus ensuring and promoting democracy. The technology’s transparency, efficiency, immunity from various threats project its potential to improve the growth of the Government in the state.

The Gist

These facts were recently highlighted by Sharat Chandra, President Government Blockchain Association, India Chapter, who emphasized the importance of relaxing the blockchain policy in our nation to increase the productivity and overall growth of the country in the macroeconomic module. However, he, like many others, pointed out the necessity of an accepted regulatory system to supervise and monitor the same.
