Though 125 days have passed since the previous review of Smart City projects conducted at MC office in the presence of cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Congress MP Ravneet Bittu, there is hardly any difference in the status of Smart City projects. The civic authorities could not complete even a single project, and many of their projects are still caught in a mesh of tenders. Civic officials, however, blamed the consultancy firm Aecom for delay in execution of the projects.
Congress MP Bittu has warned officials to expedite the pace of Smart City projects, otherwise he would complain to the Prime Minister’s office against the company for its failures. Apart from this, even the central government has made it clear that no new proposals will be accepted after September 10 under the Smart City Mission. Instead, officials should complete the already proposed works.
Meanwhile, officials were asked to explain why they could not complete even the solar panels and LED streetlights project in the city. Now, officials have been given time until September 15 to complete the solar panel projects, and installation of road signboards will have to be completed by the end of December. Along with this, officials were told to complete the LED project within 15-20 days, and start the installation process.
However, the construction of Integrated Command and Control Centre building inside the premises of the MC D Zone office has met with an objection by Ashu, because of a sewerage line that passes underneath. He has advised officials to locate some other place for the construction of the centre. Later, it was decided that there would be regular meetings of the Smart City Mission to avoid delay in completion of projects.
Notably, the last review meeting was held on April 19, and even at that time, the status of these projects was almost similar, except a few minor changes. Almost three years have passed after the announcement of Smart City Mission, and around two years have passed since civic officials started working on these projects.
Civic officials also blamed the condition of not allotting works to a single bidder, unless tenders were floated three times, and this condition had been set by Local Bodies minister Navjot Sidhu. The officials claimed that if there was no such condition, then many projects might have have been executed until now.
