Tying up with corporates for technical expertise and support, unit aims to bring in natl and global inputs

As the national smart city mission begins to get under way in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to set up a Parivartan (transformation) unit to support the implementation of different projects, after it completes all standard operating procedures for the project. The cell is aimed at providing expertise, advice and technical support to the civic administration.

PMC has already tied up with City Connect — a platform of companies working together for the development of the city) for this purpose. A proposal regarding the same has been tabled at the standing committee meeting for approval, scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

Deputy municipal commissioner Anil Pawar explained, "The unit will support PMC in executing the smart city plan here. It will bring to the table both national and international level expertise in different fields, as well as technical individuals, who will share updated information with us about best practices in urban areas in different countries that are used to solve problems."

As mentioned in the smart city proposal, PMC will not be spending a single penny on the unit — all the expenses will be taken care of by City Connect. Further, PMC will review the unit every three months.

The civic body has drafted a smart city plan (SCP) of Rs 3,860 crore for Pune, including projects like 24x7 water supply, slum rehabilitation schemes, river improvement, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) routes, solid waste processing plants, etc., after dividing the city into 11 sectors. Nearing the launch of actual work, the PMC has formed and titled the implementing body as the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL). It is anticipating funds of Rs 194 crore from the Centre and Rs 98 crore from the state.

In June last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the national smart city mission, sparking a contest among various cities vying for inclusion in the programme. The Union urban development ministry had ultimately received proposals for 97 cities of different states. The Centre had, on January 28 this year, announced the names of the first 20 urban areas to be developed as smart cities, in which Pune ranked second. Selected cities will be equipped with basic infrastructure, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity and e-governance mechanisms under the mission.
