The BMC plan to make Mumbai a smart city is not smart enough. At least that's what corporators from across parties believe. Corporators ripped apart the BMC's proposed smart city plan at the civic standing committee meeting on Friday.
Hitting out at the plan, they alleged that the plan was outdated and won't be able to get the central government's nod. Some opposition corporators also alleged the plan would benefit just a few select developers and wasn't smart in the real sense.
"This plan is completely outdated. If we call this a smart city plan, then its is a joke. The areas chosen for development in first phase are already in better condition and poorly developed locations that need proper development have been ignored. The smart city proposal boasts of things like 24×7 water supply, cleanliness, better roads etc. These are 19th century concepts. I'm sure the BMC's plan will be shot off. The civic administration will be responsible if Mumbai looses out," said Sandeep Deshpande, MNS group leader in the BMC.
Corporators pointed out that the plan has very weak focus on issues like e-governance, integration of transport and online citizen services.
However, additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said that the plan was yet to be finalised. "This proposal is not final and suggestions made by corporators or citizens will be included in the final plan. Some projects like water supply, roads improvements have been included as per the criteria of central government," Srinivas said.
