The Oulgaret Municipality would conduct a public voting here to know the views of the people with respect to converting area into a smart city.

Chief town planner S Raghunathan said that since the draft plan was to be prepared for with the inclusion of the views of the people, a voting would be conducted. The views of the stakeholders are being elicited for selecting three smart applications for infrastructure improvement. Of the 24 solutions provided under the Smart city scheme, Puducherry has shortlisted five.

These include Smart application in solid waste management, ICT and e-governance, CCTV surveillance across critical junction and entry and exit points in Puducherry and smart tourism, Urban mobility, which includes smart parking, traffic management, GPS enabled public transport and smart metres for electricity and water supply. Out of these five, the people will have to vote for any three of their choice.

As per the voting, the items preferred by most will be taken up for inclusion in the Smart City project proposal being prepared by its consultant Mahindra Consulting Engineers and others. Moreover the Pondicherry Planning Authority, which is preparing the masterplan had also elicited the views of the people through a stakeholders meeting three months back. People have expressed that improvement in solid waste management, drainage and traffic congestion.
