District Meerut got its first ever e-governance cell on Tuesday, with magistrate Pankaj Yadav inviting no VIP, but an ordinary 75-year-old woman to inaugurate it at the collectorate. The cell will provide information about government schemes to people, apart from addressing their day-to-day grievances.

This is the first step towards paperless governance, the DM said. "Officials in all government departments have been given training so that they can smoothly carry out public work like issuing caste certificates. At 25 locations in the district, 80 computers attached with printers and other devices are installed for providing quick services to the common man."

When asked why he invited an ordinary elderly woman from one of the weaker sections of the society to inaugurate the cell, Yadav said, "When we talk about an environment where all the work is done through computers, the common man, especially those who are illiterate, feel vulnerable and do not feel part of the system. We wanted people to feel that their association is important and that they can actually avail benefits of this cell. Apart from the head office, 25 different offices of the cell will be set up across the district so that people can easily approach the government. We hope that this objective will be successful."

Earlier, the state government had started a service delivery gateway scheme in 2012 across all districts and eight departments were covered under it. Recently, Meerut was declared an e-district by UP government.
