Bunking class won't be an easy task for the children studying in government schools in the corporation limit anymore. Parents will be alerted about the absence of their children via SMS if the students are absent from the schools.

The city corporation will bring all the schools under the Sahaaya School Management system of the Information Kerala Mission (IKM) under which parents will get regular updates on the overall performance of students, attendance, marks and progress report monitoring via SMS. The scheme was launched by the local self-government department in the state as part of the E-governance imitative.

The project aims at creating a friendly relationship between the school and parents so that they can get update about their children. The project will help to track and monitor the activities of students once they arrive at the schools. IKM has already introduced the system on an experimental basis in 30 schools in Kollam corporation limit and two schools in Thiruvananthapuram.

The project will cover the entire state in a phased manner on the basis of requests submitted by the respective local self-government bodies. The required fund for the installation of system at the schools will be allotted from the plan fund of the respective LSG bodies.

The schools will send information about daily attendance, notification about PTA meeting, schools holidays, extra classes, time table of examinations, progress report, assignments and marks card. In the long run, the schools will send emails to parents about the various programmes and progress of their children.

According to corporation, a total of 161 schools, both in government and aided categories have been functioning under its jurisdiction. Of the 161, 61 of them are LP schools, 37 are and remaining 63 are high schools and higher secondary schools. 81 of them come under the aided category.

CP Suresh Kumar, executive director of IKM said that the Sahaaya School management system will cover only the government schools in the respective LSG bodies. "We have decided to explore the potential of SMS service to update parents about the academic affairs of their children. Incidents like the missing and death of girl students in the Konni incident could be averted with the installation of facility in the schools as the schools will immediately send messages to the numbers of their parents in case the students fail to turn up at the schools. The attendance will be registered on the system, which will send SMS alerts to parents so that the parents can track their children and their routines. The facility to will cover students from Class 1 to Plus Two," he said.

Usha Devi, city corporation education standing committee chairperson, said that project will help to create more bonding between the parents and the school. "At present, there is not much interaction between the schools and the parents. The scheme will be executed on the basis of getting official-level communication," she said.
