Transforming Government since 2001
The General Services Administration in the US shut down Apps.gov, the federal government’s cloud and software services portal, on the 1st of December.

The portal was launched in 2009 with the objective of being a one-stop shop for US government departments and agencies looking for cloud services to reduce their costs and increase efficiency. Its offerings included business and productivity applications, infrastructure services and social software solutions.

GSA did not release a reason for shutting down the portal, but observers believe the high cost of services on Apps.gov leading to low use of the portal might be a factor. All the services that were offered on Apps.gov will still be available to government agencies on GSA Advantage, the government’s online shopping system.

Apps.gov has been replaced by info.apps.gov, a website to enable agencies to “gather information about how cloud computing can help create sustainable, more cost-effective IT Services for the Federal Government”.
